Welcome to The SFR Brigade Presents blog hoppy thing… If you click on the picture below, you’ll go back to the SFR Brigade main page.
The point here is to share a paragraph from a WIP – work in progress – or a current or future release in the SFR – science fiction romance – genre.
I would have liked to have shared a snippet from Fortune’s Honor, the second book in my Soldiers of Fortune series, about the crew of a space freighter/smuggling vessel called the Good Fortune… but unfortunately, Fortune’s Honor has been held up in production and won’t be released this year. We’re looking at sometime in 2014 instead. And as a a result, books 3 and 4 are on hold, as well.
So I’m afraid you’ll have to make do with a tiny tidbit from Fortune’s Hero, the first book in the series, instead. Fortune’s Hero was published in December last year, so if you like the excerpt, you’ll actually be in a position to read the rest of the book if you want.
Without further ado, here are Quinn and Elsa, stumbling around in the desert on Marica-3:
“Scuse me?”
Elsa felt a wash of color stain her cheeks. “Why didn’t you tell Doctor Sterling what he wanted to know? You’re not Marican.” He shouldn’t feel any loyalty to the citizens of the annexed planet. It was none of his concern what happened to them.
He looked at her for a second, his face unreadable, before he said, “I got paid not to.”
Not enough, flashed through her mind. She almost said it out loud, but bit the words back at the last moment. “You went through all of that—” the worms, the whippings, the injections, the exsanguination, “—for money?”
“I went to work for the Maricans for money. The silence was part of the contract. It always is.”
“I hope they paid well.”
That unguarded remark earned her another glance, one that held something akin to surprise before it morphed into suspicion and then hostility. “There ain’t enough money in the world to pay for what you people did to me. But the Maricans paid well enough. And you take on the risk when you take on the job.”
His tone of voice effectively closed the subject.

And there you have it. You can find out more about Fortune’s Hero and the rest of the series on the Soldiers of Fortune series page.
Nice to revisit Quinn and Elsa, Jenna!
Loved FORTUNE’S HERO.
Awww, thanks, sweetie! I had fun writing it. I’m sad that book 2 is on hold. 🙁
So much going on here obviously. Sorry to hear your books have been held up but I did enjoy this snippet!
You weave some great tension in this snippet, and we get a peek of background. Nice.
